Medical Abortion (up to 10 weeks)

A medical abortion is done using two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. Patients who choose this method are given mifepristone in the clinic and misoprostol to take at home 24-72 hours later.

  • Bleeding typically starts within 6 hours of ingesting the Misoprostol in 99% of people. Patients can expect to bleed heavy- 1 pad per hour, passing several clots and have heavy cramping.
  • Once the bleeding starts, 93% of people will pass their pregnancy in the first 6 hours. Some people take less time and some take more. About 7% of patients do not pass their pregnancy for several days.

You can expect to have continuous bleeding with or without cramps for a few weeks after the Misoprostol.   About 7 out of 100 people who choose medical abortion may need an aspiration after because the pregnancy did not completely pass from the uterus or to stop bleeding.  Pregnancy testing and a follow up is recommended 4-6 weeks after a medical abortion to ensure the abortion is complete.

First Trimester Procedures

A first trimester abortion is considered very low risk and performed through the 14th week of pregnancy by suction aspiration.  We offer a variety of options to manage your pain relief and comfort. Most patients who choose to receive sedation report that they feel no discomfort during the procedure. If you select intravenous sedation, you will be unable to drive and will need to have someone take you home. The procedure normally lasts less than 5 minutes, and your total in-clinic time is usually between 2-3 hours.

Second Trimester Procedures (14 – 26 weeks)

The procedure used is suction aspiration and dilation and evacuation, which are also considered very low-risk. We offer a variety of options to manage your pain relief and comfort. Most of our patients report that they feel no discomfort during the procedure. For some pain-relief medications, you will not be able to drive and will need to have someone pick you up.

If your pregnancy is over 13 weeks, we may give you a medication 1-2 hours before the procedure to help prepare your cervix and enable us to perform the procedure more easily. In most cases up to 16 weeks the procedure can be completed the same day. The procedure normally lasts less than 15 minutes, and your total in-clinic time is usually less than 3 hours.

If your pregnancy is from 16 to 26 weeks, we will complete the procedure over two days. Your total time in the clinic is usually less than 3 hours each day, and the procedure normally lasts less than 20 minutes on the second day.
